Metro Detroit: Wayne’s Avenue American Bistro

This weeks adventure takes us to Wayne, to a locally owned establishment that is serving up some creative scratch-made-to-order food.  It is a bistro, but some refer to it as a sports bar in the sense they have tv’s and they usually have sports playing.  The Avenue American Bistro is not new, but it is new to us.  We were told about it by some friends that told us we would love it, and we did.

Located in the Heart of Downtown Wayne, it is a culinary delight! They opened their doors in 2010 and are still going strong today.  The inside is wide open with lots of space.  There are murals painted on the cinderblock walls depicting the blue collar workers the Detroit and surrounding communities were built on. The atmosphere, food and the service are exactly what we look for when we go out.

Most importantly, we are here to talk about the food: Like previously stated, it is scratch-made, right down to their sauces and dressings.  Everything is prepared to order and they have some creative and delicious items on their menu.

They owners, with over 60 years combined culinary experience, created a menu with “distinct flavor profiles” with the intentions of “disrupting the food and beverage industry in a positive meaningful way” . With items like their chipotle hummus, General Tso’s Cauliflower and Nashville hot Fish sandwich I think they have succeeded.

The menu is pretty simple, yet offers some creative choices.  The sections are broken down to 6 categories: starters or sharables, sides, street tacos, sliders, handhelds and salads. No entrees. They also have 8 house made sauces for dipping with choices like Red Pop BBQ and Peppered Ketchup.  A lot of time and effort goes into their food, they have a 14 hours Korean smoked brisket and a 10 hour onion soup.  They also offer daily specials like the buffalo chicken egg rolls we had when we went there.

The food is delicious! The egg rolls had great flavor and were served with their house made blue cheese dressing.  After enjoying our egg rolls we ordered the smoked brisket nachos and the Sweet Heat Shrimp Street Tacos.  Everything was delicious and full of flavor.  The presentation was spot on as well, the nachos were a wok of art.

There were so many things we wanted to try, especially their sliders which are served 2 to an order.  The Chicken SOHO and White BBQ Brisket caught our eye, who makes a White BBQ sauce?

We can’t wait to get back there.  It is definitely worth going out of the way for.  They are located at 3632 Elizabeth Street in Wayne at the corner of Elizabeth and Michigan Ave.  They are open everyday form 11AM to 10 PM.

Until next time . . . live well, eat well and enjoy life!
